Bilgi :As long as you're not expecting Gladiator (rather think those Steve Reeves sandal epics of yesteryear) then you'll be reasonably entertained by this adventure “epic” - and as long as you have a healthy sense of irony about you.

Set in Roman times in which the Goths overrun Rome and a small band of loyal soldiers must protect the child Emperor young Romulus Augustus (Thomas Sangster), the film boasts “international stars” such as Colin Firth (Bridget Jones), Ben Kingsley (Gandhi) and Bollywood megastar Aishwarya Rai last seen in Mistress of Spices.

Rai can't act at all, but it is fun to see her try at being an Angelina Jolie / Lara Croft style bad ass action heroine. (She's of course gorgeous to simply gawp at.) Kingsley - in laughable fake beard – is in “take the cheque and run” mode while Firth . . . well, Firth is as mediocre as the movie he's in, but there's a reason why Firth never made it to the A-list of Hollywood leading men.

While there is something low rent and cheesy about The Last Legion, the film's production values at least isn't of bottom-of-the-barrel straight-to-video quality. Instead the film's photography, special effects, costumes, scenery, soundtrack music, etc. don't come across as a complete waste of celluloid. In fact there are some decent locations (the best scenery is a Mediterranean island that serves as the setting for the film's best action sequence involving a daring rescue) and the CGI could have been a whole lot worse to be honest.

The film's other tangibles don't come off too well. The screenplay is tepid and predictable - the bits in-between action sequences are just plain dull. The action sequences themselves aren't too badly staged, but in the age of the fantastic battles in the Lord of the Rings movies they come across as tame and small scale.

Last Legion has its fair share of goofy elements – big hairy muscled guys with Viking helmets looking like either ‘Eighties metal band members or Wagner opera extras always have us chuckling appreciatively in our popcorn. What's not to like? However the sad truth is that the film never really truly embraces its own goofiness and keeps it at arm's length. The Last Legion never realises that it is a bad movie and suffers for it. A more energetic and over-the-top approach would have served the film better. The film's pacing and editing is simply too slow.

Instead we get a film that takes itself too seriously while we in the audience don't. One action sequence halfway through has a fair amount of fun, but in the end simply depresses one because it is an indication of how much more fun the film could have been. The endless hand-to-hand swordfights will have you looking at your watch as the film loses all momentum towards the end and grinds towards its predictable ending.

If you want an action epic set in ancient times, then 300 with its stylistic overkill is probably a much safer bet. Last Legion is something you'll rent one day when all the good stuff is out or catch late on TV one night.

Bilgi :There are essentially two things you need to know about 300: It's extremely violent, and it's unlike anything you've seen before.

The first point should come as little surprise for a movie about the Greco-Persian Wars, specifically The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. According to history, King Xerxes (yep, the same guy who takes Esther to be queen in the Bible) launched a massive campaign against Greece with an army that most claim to have numbered in the hundreds of thousands—some even say the millions. Many states were easily conquered by Persia's might, and Sparta seemed poised to fall next.

Not if King Leonidas could help it. Sparta was a militaristic state, reputed for its disciplined warriors—the special-ops forces of their time. As the film tells it, nationalistic pride drove Leonidas to refuse Xerxes' demand for submission. However, despite his requests to dispatch the combined Greek army for retaliation, the local priests and their oracle refused, apparently because of a religious festival—Sparta's equivalent to the Sabbath. As Leonidas asks in the film, what must a king do to save the very city whose laws demand he do nothing?

Leonidas (Gerard Butler) seeks the counsel of his wife and queen, Gorgo (Lena Headey)

With defiant loyalty to his country and firm convictions bordering on madness, Leonidas rallied together all he could muster: a small detachment of his 300 finest warriors, plus a small army of less experienced Greeks willing to participate. Those odds seem suicidal, yet the fiercely courageous Spartans managed to wipe out wave after wave of stunned Persian soldiers at a strategic mountain pass, with hope that reinforcements might eventually arrive.

The battle was previously depicted in Rudolph Maté's 1962 film The 300 Spartans, but not with this level of graphic detail. Gladiator? Braveheart? Kid stuff. 300 offers hundreds of stabbings, impalements, dismemberments, and beheadings—not to mention blood galore. I can't say it any more plainly: If you don't like movie violence, do not see this film.

And yet I must also confess, the violence didn't shock me as I expected. You might call it desensitization, though I still wince at the graphic brutality in films like Braveheart, Schindler's List, and Saving Private Ryan. Chalk it up instead to the stunning visuals, which brings me back to point number two: This movie is unlike anything you've seen before.

Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the Persian king who claims to be a god

300 is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller (Sin City, Batman: Year One), and as with Sin City, director Zack Snyder (2004's Dawn of the Dead) uses the same technique of computer generated art direction to faithfully reproduce every panel of Miller's acclaimed work, only adding scenes out of necessity to elaborate on the story and provide character development—particularly Queen Gorgo and her efforts to persuade the Greek council to send the army to support her husband.

The result is an eye-popping vision with massive armies, imaginative landscapes, and lots of slow-motion action. It's all so stylized, 300 comes off less as a horrific reenactment than as an art museum or history book come to life. Aside from the actors, most everything you see is computer-generated—including the blood—presumably allowing Snyder to control every component of the shot to make it as artful as possible. Virtually any given still from this movie could pass for a hyper-realistic painting.

A wounded Leonidas roars his defiance at the Persian invaders

As such, the violence almost appears fake at times, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I prefer not to be distracted by shock value and "quality kills." This is history played up as folklore—the sort of thing where a storyteller recounts how a hero slew a hundred men with but one swing of his sword. Indeed, 300 shows a Spartan stopping a rhino with a single spear throw. Another soldier recounts the history of Leonidas, who as a ten-year old killed a demonic-looking wolf with gleaming eyes. Xerxes himself is portrayed as a bronzed and bejeweled Goliath, at least eight feet tall with a deep voice, yet effeminate face. The overall mood is thus more mythical than reality, which is probably why the film seems more palatable.

But make no mistake. Some will object to the film's apparently revelry in violence. To some extent it's necessary—just as violence of some magnitude would be necessary in bringing the book of Judges to the big screen. The real question is whether 300 glorifies violence unnecessarily, and it probably does since The 300 Spartans wasn't as graphic. But much of the violence in 300 isn't that far removed from what was seen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which at times came close to an R rating with its decapitations and dismemberments.

Some will feel that 300's other adult content is more problematic. The aforementioned oracle does some sensual writhing in the nude. There's a grotesque Persian orgy that goes a little too far in making its point. Leonidas shares a short, somewhat graphic love scene with his queen. There's also an implied rape. And let's not forget that we're watching 300 ultra-ripped, half-naked male specimens with 12-pack abs on screen for most of the film. Like everything else in this movie, it's all artfully handled, but is it also too much to take? Consider yourself warned, and use careful discernment.

The battle scenes are few, but quite intense

All things considered, you'd think 300 is nothing more than a testosterone fueled, sword-clanging epic with stylish visuals. But I have to believe that the two guys who sat near me—giggling and rubbing their hands in anticipation as the battles geared up—were a little disappointed that such a movie is so talky. 300 is not the popcorn action flick some might be expecting. It's more like a war movie for fans of comic books, art history, and opera—propelled more by ideas and images, not action.

There's much talk (and posturing) between the action sequences, raising interesting themes about what the Spartans were fighting for: idealism vs. realism, perhaps even their very souls. Consider a scene where one Spartan offers to betray his countrymen for personal reasons. Xerxes comes across as the Devil himself, promising him wealth, women, and power, repeatedly extolling his kindness: "Leonidas would have you stand. All I ask is that you kneel." It's one of the most striking scenes of temptation I've ever seen in film, while providing some insight into what the Spartan "stand" truly represents—to take a self-proclaimed "god-king" down a peg by sheer force of will (and sheer force).

I cannot stress enough that this movie is not for everyone because of its violence and excesses. Nevertheless, the execution is artful (literally and figuratively) and it presents some lofty ideas in the process. With filmmaking both epic and imaginative, 300 is the stuff that legends are made of.

rank Miller'in grafik romanından uyarlanan "300" de MÖ 480 yılında ephorlar(Sparta'nın üst düzey sulh yargıçları) Leonidas'la beraber 300 kraliyet korumasını Thermopylae dağ geçidine, Pers'lerin yenilmez kralı Xerves'in ordusuna karşı geçidi savunmak için gönderilirler.

Singing In The Rain

Singin' in the Rain (1952) is one of the most-loved and celebrated film musicals of all time from MGM, before a mass exodus to filmed adaptationsof Broadway plays emerged as a standard pattern. It was made directly for film, and was not a Broadway adaptation.

The joyous film, co-directed by Stanley Donen and acrobatic dancer-star-choreographer Gene Kelly, is a charming, up-beat, graceful and thoroughly enjoyable experience with great songs, lots of flashbacks, wonderful dances (including the spectacular Broadway Melody Ballet with leggy guest star Cyd Charisse), casting and story. This was another extraordinary example of the organic, 'integrated musical' in which the story's characters naturally express their emotions in the midst of their lives. Song and dance replace the dialogue, usually during moments of high spirits or passionate romance. And over half of the film - a 'let's put on a play' type of film, is composed of musical numbers.

This superb film, called "MGM's TECHNICOLOR Musical Treasure," was produced during MGM studios' creative pinnacle. From the late 1930s to the early 1960s, producer Arthur Freed produced more than forty musicals for MGM. The creative forces at the studio in the Freed Unit - composed of Freed, Vincente Minnelli, Stanley Donen, and actor/choreographer Gene Kelly - also collaborated together to produce such gems as Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), The Pirate (1948), On the Town (1949), Best Picture Oscar-winner a year earlier with director Vincente Minnelli - An American in Paris (1951), Royal Wedding (1951), Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954), and Gigi (1958).

Because the colorful, witty film is set in 1927, it humorously satirizes and parodies the panic surrounding the troubling transitional period from silents to talkies in the dream factory of Hollywood of the late 1920s as the sound revolution swept through. The film's screenplay, suggested by the song Singin' in the Rain that was written by Freed and Brown, was scripted by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (who also wrote On the Town (1949)). The time frame of Comden's and Green's script, the Roaring 20s Era of flappers, was mostly determined by the fact that lyricist Freed (and songwriter Nacio Herb Brown) had written their extensive library of songs in their early careers during the 1920s and 1930s, when Hollywood was transitioning to talkies. The musical comedy's story, then, would be best suited around that theme. Except for two songs, all of the musical arrangements in the film to be showcased were composed by Freed and Brown for different Hollywood films before Freed became a producer.

[The title song was originally created by lyricist Arthur Freed and composer Nacio Herb Brown for MGM's Hollywood Revue of 1929 (1929). The general storyline of the film was derived from Once in a Lifetime (1932), a hilarious adaptation of the Moss Hart-George S. Kaufman play also set during the time of panic surrounding Hollywood's transition to talkies.]

Bilgi :When it comes to horror films, the Saw set a unique standard that has been the sort of film that has been ground-breaking for all the wrong reasons. The first two films have helped changed the way horror films are created in the last couple years on a purely fiscal scale. Both films had tiny budgets by typical Hollywood standards yet managed to gross over $100 million worldwide apiece, making them extremely profitable on budgets that were less than $7 million combined. Horror films since have been made on the cheap, maximizing profits by having smaller budgets and relying more on marketing to generate enough of an opening weekend to turn a profit even before a lengthy stay at the box office or DVD revenues are generated.

The Saw franchise follows the same basic premise as any other horror franchise. Add in one bad guy, in this case the “Jigsaw” killer (Tobin Bell), and a pile of dead bodies to go with a revolving door of authority figures trying to crack the case and one has all the requisites to make a horror film. It also has some terrific cinematography and a good score, which are two musts in a genre known for quick cuts and mood elements derived from music. Coupled with an unusually strong performance from its main star, Tobin Bell, the film has all the elements to be a strong finale to what is allegedly the final film of the franchise.

Saw III follows Jigsaw, now on his death bed from cancer attended to by his assistant/apprentice Amanda (Shawnee Smith). As he’s dying he wants to live for one more game: to try and teach Jeff (Angus Macfadyen) the meaning of forgiveness. To that end he and Amanda have set up a series of tests, complimented by a talented doctor Lynn (Bahar Soomekh) kidnapped by the duo to ensure his survival throughout the contest. It’s a unique entry into the series and, rumors aside, feels like the end of the franchise. The key thing to consider is whether or not it can recapture the frenzied madness of the first.

It does not do any of the following; while the series is never known for being witty or creative in any sense, the original Saw had something to see beyond graphic horror sequences. Sadly that’s all Saw III brings to the table this time around. While it’s an effectively made thriller, it’s not a very entertaining one. It’s almost laughable at moments, if not for the effective use of blood and gore to keep the laughter at bay. It’s a slick-looking film, one of the strong points of the series as a whole, and the film’s scenery and settings are remarkably well done. One wouldn’t guess that this was an inexpensive film to make based on just how good it looks.

The key thing that lets the film down is its dialogue, or lack thereof. The characters aren’t given many words to use beyond multitudes of profanity, and it’s almost as if the script was initially just the hundred or so profanities the production staff wanted to use in the film and they used words around it to try and create something out of it. It makes many of the scenes, which have plenty of dramatic overtones, come in much more comical than scary. There’s a feeling while watching the film that the actors are forcing the profanity out much like a young adult uses curse words for dramatic effect; it’s not needed or warranted most of the time and doesn’t do anything more than insult the intelligence of anyone unfortunate to actually watch this film. It doesn’t hurt that the film has an absurd amount of plot twists and “shocking” dramatic moments; it’s almost as if the script was written by a pair of teenaged horror film fans with bad vocabularies, employing things that have worked in other films as solo items into one bad plot structure, cramming all of these en masse to a blunted effect.

And it takes a lot away from a solid performance by Bell. While it isn’t anything extraordinary of note, it’s a strong performance as Bell seizes on a lot of good moments scattered throughout the film and makes the most of them. Bell is much more of a professional in his acting than the cast for the most part and it shows; he brings a level of class to the proceedings, giving Jigsaw something of a personality in a room full of one dimensional characters.

Saw III may or may not be the end of the Saw franchise. While the film’s finale would make for a much more difficult entry into the genre, as a fourth film in the franchise would have to make some logic and plot leaps that would make this film seem reasonable by comparison, it’s a fitting end to the franchise.

Testere 2 - Saw 2 2005 DUAL

Yönetmen : Darren Lynn Bousman
Yapım : 2005
Ülke : Amerika
Tür : Horror
Süre : 93 dakika
IMDB Puan : 7.1/10 imdb
IMDB ID: tt0432348

Oyuncular
Donnie Wahlberg - Eric Matthews
Shawnee Smith - Amanda
Tobin Bell - Jigsaw
Franky G - Xavier
Glenn Plummer - Jonas
Dina Meyer - Kerry
Emmanuelle Vaugier - Addison
Beverley Mitchell - Laura
Erik Knudsen - Daniel
Tim Burd - Obi (as Timothy Burd)

Bilgi :Jigsaw, the serial killer with a particularly imaginative bent, is back in this sequel to last year's sleeper horror hit. Attempting to resurrect the sort of gory, hard-core horror film that has been eclipsed in recent years by the plethora of tamer, PG-13 releases, Lions Gate and the all too aptly named Twisted Pictures clearly have a new franchise on their hands. Halloween grosses should be monstrous, with plenty of video business to follow.
The killer himself takes a far more prominent role in this edition, and as played by the superb Tobin Bell he's quite a memorable creation. Soft-voiced and physically frail because of the cancer ravaging his body, the diabolical Jigsaw is determined to make people appreciate their lives, mainly by dispatching them in the most ingenious of ways.
The first victim, bloodily disposed of even before the opening credits roll, tries unsuccessfully to gouge out his own eye in order to retrieve a key that has been surgically implanted.
Caught early on in the proceedings by burned-out (is there any other kind?) detective Eric Matthews (Donnie Wahlberg) and his gorgeous partner (Dina Meyer, reprising her role from the original), Jigsaw taunts them with a live video feed of his latest would-be victims, a group of eight hapless characters that happens to include Matthews' young son. Trapped in a dilapidated house filled with traps that include a pit filled with dirty syringes and a container lined with razor-sharp blades, they attempt to escape by deciphering their captor's twisted clues. As might be expected, the group, which also includes a macho hothead (Franky G) and one of Jigsaw's previous victims (Shawnee Smith), don't exactly prove harmonious in their interactions.
Although their plot structure and characterizations are pedestrian, co-screenwriters Darren Lynn Bousman (who also directed) and Leigh Whannell deliver a series of reasonably clever and horrific set pieces. If the machinations don't quite make the startling impact of those in the original, they also far outshine the pedestrian mayhem on display in the current horror glut. And though the villainous central character looks barely healthy enough to make it into the inevitable next installment, the basic concept is elastic enough to provide for an endless series of "Saw" follow-ups.

Bilgi :40 years ago, Don Haskins went on the recruiting trail to find the best talent in the land, black or white. 7 blacks and 5 whites made up the legendary 1965-66 Texas Western Miners. They were mocked and ridiculed for their showboating and flaunting of black players on the court. Yet, in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, Haskins and his Miners came together as a team united to reach the National Championship game against powerhouse Kentucky.

Perfect Stranger Kusursuz Yabancı 2007

Yapım : 2007
Ülke : Amerika

Oyuncular
Halle Berry, Rowena
Bruce Willis, Harrison Hill

Richard Portnow, Narron

Florencia Lozano, Lieutenant Tejada
Nicki Aycox, Grace
Kathleen Chalfant, Elizabeth Clayton
Gordon MacDonald, Senator Sachs

Bilgi :I'm not sure whether to feel sorry for Halle Berry. She is, after all, one of the most beautiful women in the world and her turns in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge and Monster's Ball proved she's got talent. But for all of her talent and accolades, she has a penchant for getting involved in inane movie projects— Swordfish, Catwoman, Gothika, and now Perfect Stranger.

In this "sexy thriller," Berry plays Rowena, an investigative journalist for the New York Courier. We pick up her story just as she's exposed a Mark Foley-like scandal. Her paper subsequently squashes the story and Ro quits after a drunken verbal tirade sponsored by the First Amendment.

After angrily walking out on her job, Ro runs to make the train and is followed by a woman calling out her name. Ro ignores her, as if she doesn't know her. Once Ro misses the train and the woman catches up with her in the station, Ro calls her Grace and tries to ignore her in the way you only can if you do actually know the person. Faced with conflicting clues, I wondered if Grace was mistaking Ro for someone else; perhaps she was a crazy-streetwalker-cum-sage who was speaking some mysterious prophecy; I even toyed with the idea that this Grace was a ghost.

Grace's rendezvous with Ro is an attempt to entice Ro to become an instrument of revenge; Grace's high-profile married lover, Harrison Hill, is now spurning her advances, and she wants Ro to reveal his philandering ways to the world. Rowena demurs with irritation, but Grace forces her to take a stack of incriminating e-mails as Ro gets on the next train. They part as Grace smirks, "Say hi to your mom."

Bruce Willis as Harrison Hill

Oh-so-gradually we learn that Rowena and Grace are childhood friends whose relationship has turned sour. (Note to self: She's not a ghost.) But when Grace turns up dead a week after their meeting in the subway (Note to self: now she is a ghost! I knew there was something dead about her), Rowena goes on a crusade to track down the killer. Suspect number one: Harrison Hill.

Hill, played by Bruce Willis, is a slick ad man with a soft spot for pretty girls that Ro hits hard. With a wardrobe of tight skirts and low-cut blouses, she goes undercover in his ad agency to gather evidence that he offed Grace in order to keep her from exposing their affair. If his moneybags wife found out, he stood to lose everything. His motives seem obvious. But, are they? (dun, dun, duuuun)

Giovanni Ribisi as Miles
Giovanni Ribisi as Miles
spacer

Ro's accomplice in her undercover effort is her friend and tech guru Miles (Giovanni Ribisi). As all movie tech gurus do, Miles performs impossibly fast feats involving firewalls and passwords and secret files. And also as all movie tech gurus do, he's crushing hard on the leading lady. He is both the most likeable and the creepiest character in the movie—a testament to Ribisi's always complex take on even the most peripheral people in any plot. A scene in which Ro stumbles into a secret room in his apartment is one of the most disturbing in the whole movie.

Perfect Stranger has a convoluted, dream-like quality. Whole scenes, like one in which Ro appears to be at an accident investigation scene (her job might have provided some reason for her to be there, but she's already quit by this point), aren't explained at all. Characters come in and out of view with few concrete details about how they're connected to one another. Grace's introduction is porous. And the friendly intimacy between Miles and Ro has no context. When Ro starts again to see the boyfriend who cheated on her with Grace, we start to wonder how well we've been introduced to our intrepid journalist herself.

Harrison and Ro rendez-vous
Harrison and Ro rendez-vous
spacer

I think this amorphous quality is meant to be a creative driver for tension. Instead, when the twists start twisting, I, quite frankly, didn't care about the outcome. It's not exactly the experience one hopes to have 90 minutes into a "who done it?" movie. And it wasn't surprising to learn that the director filmed three different endings to the movie, each with a different character as the killer. The plot is so ridden with holes that anyone could have done it. Cue moral ambiguity.

Interestingly, this hole-ridden, morally ambiguous tale was penned by a Christian, Todd Komarnicki (whose first movie was Elf, which he produced). In a 2003 interview with Christianity Today, Komarnicki emphasized the importance of telling a good story: "We have a savior who was a storyteller, [so] I think there is great value in story … I think it's a very powerful tool. Certainly, like any tool, it can be misused." He concluded by saying that "storytelling is what makes the movie business work."

Too bad it didn't work for this movie. A typical episode of Law and Order is less ridden with cliché (which is saying something, given that the series is about as formulaic as it gets) and more satisfying. You'd probably be happier if you stayed home. And as for Halle Berry, I suggest she get a new person to screen her scripts. Her talents could be far better employed.

Bilgi :Meet the Robinsons, the latest feature-length cartoon from the Walt Disney studio, is a time-warp story about a boy who finds himself caught between the past and the future—and that pretty much sums up where the studio itself is these days.
This is the third computer-animated film to be made by Disney since the studio abandoned hand-drawn animation altogether a few years ago. (The first two were the moderately successful Chicken Little and the huge flop The Wild.) It's also the first Disney cartoon to come out since the studio merged with Pixar and handed the reins of the animation department over to Toy Story

director John Lasseter, who has made no secret of wanting Disney to revive some of its older traditions—including making short cartoons and, ironically enough, drawing cartoons by hand.

Lewis is looking for the family he never knew

As a result, for all its cutting-edge technology, Meet the Robinsons is peppered with self-conscious nods to the studio's past. The film is preceded by Boat Builders, a 1938 short in which Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy try to build a ship using a do-it-yourself kit; the way the components unfold and snap into place prefigures the way buildings sprout up instantaneously in Meet the Robinsons' more futuristic setting. (By the way, it is delightful to see such a vintage cartoon on the big screen, and to hear kids laugh at gags that are probably older than their grandparents.)

Then the film itself begins, and we see that the new Disney logo begins with a series of hand-drawn sketches that evolve into a clip from Steamboat Willie, the 1928 cartoon that got Disney off the ground in the first place. And finally, the film ends with a title card bearing an inspirational quote from Uncle Walt himself.

So there is a strong sense around Meet the Robinsons that the folks at Disney are trying to find their bearings. Which leaves the film itself—well into production before Lasseter took over last year—looking kind of lost.

Wilbur has some time travel-tips, and trips, for Lewis

The story concerns Lewis, an orphan on the cusp of adolescence (which may explain why his voice is credited to two young actors, Daniel Hansen and Jordan Fry, instead of just one—did someone's voice break in mid-production?). The boy is also a prodigy, an inventor of gizmos that, so far, have not been all that successful. However, Lewis is on the verge of creating a memory-scanning device out of everyday components, and with this machine, he hopes to retrieve any memories he might have of the mother who left him on the orphanage's doorstep when he was just a baby.

But first, he has to take his invention to the science fair. There, his efforts are interrupted by two people: a boy named Wilbur Robinson (Wesley Singerman), who claims to be a time cop from the future; and a dastardly, extremely neurotic, moustache-twirling villain wearing a cape and a bowler hat, who is known simply as Bowler Hat Guy (voiced by director Stephen J. Anderson).

Bowler Hat Guy is emblematic of all that works and doesn't work in Meet the Robinsons. The film is inspired by William Joyce's book A Day with the Robinsons, and on a certain level it retains the book's cheerful, flamboyant absurdism. Bowler Hat Guy may have been invented for the film, but when he sends a mind-controlled dinosaur to capture Lewis, or when he proposes turning Lewis into a duck just to stop him from thwarting his evil plan, he strikes just the right bizarre tone.

The future is a bit daunting for Lewis

But the character is also driven by a manic energy that simply never lets up, and after a while you get the feeling that the filmmakers are simply trying too hard to be strange, to be "out there", to be always catching you off-guard with weird and completely unexpected quips or character details (like the fact that Bowler Hat Guy keeps a checklist of his evil schemes in a girly, unicorn-decorated notebook). One of the judges at the science fair that Lewis attends is a woman who has covered her arm in "caffeine patches", each of which has the potency of twelve cups of coffee. Meet the Robinsons suffers from the same sort of over-stimulation.

That said, there is still a fair bit here to enjoy. The film does make room for more subtle forms of humour, especially where Lewis's sleep-deprived orphanage roommate Goob (Matthew Josten) is concerned. And when Wilbur takes Lewis into the future, it is truly a sight to behold—a retro-futuristic wonder full of flying vehicles, Art Deco buildings, elaborate topiary gardens, and jazzy singing frogs. There is also a cute gag involving a character's alleged resemblance to a certain celebrity (who is, in fact, voiced by said celebrity in question).

Meet the Robinsons, the wild family of the future

The film also imparts a serious lesson or two about how we all need family, and how we all need to take responsibility for our lives. When Bowler Hat Guy declares that he would much rather blame other people for his problems, he has already been made to look so pathetic that no one could possibly want to follow his example.

On the other hand, there are elements in this film that could leave kids confused or screaming. The storyline is a convoluted yet oddly predictable mess, which may be par for the course where time-travel stories are concerned, but probably also reflects the last-minute interventions of Lasseter and company. The third act also turns extremely dark, in a way that brings to mind the more nightmarish aspects of The Matrix, the Star Wars prequels, and the middle Back to the Future movie.

So Meet the Robinsons might be a little much for the kids. But it also doesn't have much for the adults. (There may be something here for 3-D buffs—the film is being shown in that format in hundreds of theaters, the widest release ever for a 3-D movie—but since the screening I was invited to was in simple 2-D, I could not say.)

Like so many other Disney films of late, it is ultimately forgettable, and it is noteworthy mainly as an historical footnote during a time of transition at the studio. One line the characters use a fair bit in Meet the Robinsons is "Keep moving forward!" It's an odd thing to hear in a film that spends so much time looking to the past. But presumably it is also the studio's way of letting us know that better movies are around the corner.
